Treatments: Radioiodine therapy

For the treatment of various thyroid disorders, radioiodine therapy (Jod131) is a particularly gentle
alternative to surgery.

Patient room thyroid ward

Radioiodine therapy is particularly useful in the various forms of hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism), e.g.
Basedow’s disease or the autonomic adenoma used. But it can also be effective in thyroid enlargement
(goiter). Another important role of radioiodine therapy in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

A radio-iodine therapy is a radiation treatment whose advantage is based on two specific factors:

The radiant substance (iodine131) is absorbed almost exclusively by the thyroid gland in the body and
thus acts only directly there.
The maximum reach of the Jod131 is very short at 2.2 mm and thus allows a targeted irradiation of the
thyroid gland.
The dose in the area of the thyroid gland can be precisely matched to the individual thyroid disorder and
size based on precise calculations. This ensures the success of the treatment.

The general exposure of the body to the iodine rays is low.

The radioiodine treatment can only be carried out stationary. Therefore, the patients have to spend a
few days in our comfortable nuclear medicine ward in the clinic. Spend Hancken in Stade.

Due to the constant development of anticancer drugs (chemotherapy, anti-hormonal substances,
immunotherapy with antibodies and specific target therapies), these treatments have become
increasingly compatible in recent years. With the outpatient therapy, we want to fulfill the desire for a
better quality of life.
